Diet soda makes you fat?

Posted by on Sep 9, 2011 in Recipes & Food, Resources | 0 comments

This idea has been in my thoughts for years as I saw the more people drank diet pop the less weight they lost and actually seemed to gain weight! Now, it may be that they would just get fat anyway, but there is no doubt that diet soda does nothing to help you loose weight and I am convinced it just does the opposite, makes your body pack on more pounds. I found the following article in a magazine at a doctors office just today:

First Days of Ryan’s Homeschool Co-op

Posted by on Aug 16, 2011 in Headlines, Homeschool, Life | 0 comments

The journey has begun! Ryan embarked a few days ago on his new adventure of “real school.” He has been homeschooling, as most homeschoolers do, soon after God brought him into this world and already at his ripe old age of 5 1/2, he is fairly proficient at reading simple words. This is thanks in part to some hard work over the past year  having recently completed the “Hooked on Phonics” Kindergarten levels 1 and 2 (along with his 4 year old sister Kaitlyn).

The big change came as Ryan started a Homeschooling Co-Op where he goes twice a week with eight other kids at “Gloria Deo Academy.” The co-op uses the “classical method” of learning with lots of early memorization, making it a pretty rigorous work load.  The rest of the week he is still homeschooling away with his brothers and sister. Getting a head start on his memory work, Ryan has already mastered Psalm 1:1-6 over the past few weeks

Psalm 1:1-6 (New International Version)1 Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, 2 but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night. 3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers. 4 Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. 6 For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

Below are a few pictures and a video of the last few days for you to enjoy:

Ryan’s new found interest is math as he loves numbers. Of course, treasure map drawing is still number one in his book! :p

How to install MySQL 5.5 on Ubuntu

Posted by on Jul 25, 2011 in Computers, Open Dental | 17 comments

I have been beating my head against the wall for almost a year now, trying to figure out how to install MySQL 5.5 on Ubuntu since there is still not a .deb package to use. OpenDental software makes use of MySQL as it’s database and since my servers have always run Ubuntu, I didn’t really want to switch to an RPM based distro and have to learn new tricks for that system just for this reason. MySQL 5.1 was giving off and on errors and the time had come that I to either get it to work or ditch Ubuntu for and RPM based distro (probably OpenSuse/Fedora/Mandriva).

Finally, after trying it seems like twenty or thirty tutorials on the net and having problem at one point or another with all of them, I succeeded and got MySQL 5.5.14 running on Ubuntu 11.04 “lucid!”

If you follow the steps below from a standard Ubuntu/MySQL LAMP server install, you should be able to have a working v5.5 server in no time!

(help from this thread: https://code.launchpad.net/~clint-fewbar/ubuntu/natty/mysql-5.1/mysql-5.5-packaging)

64bit Machine w/ MySQL 5.5.14

sudo apt-get purge mysql-server
sudo apt-get purge mysql-client
sudo apt-get purge mysql-common
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get autoclean

sudo rm -fr /var/lib/mysql

sudo wget -O MySQL-server-5.5.14-1.linux2.6.x86_64.rpm http://dev.mysql.com/get/Downloads/MySQL-5.5/MySQL-server-5.5.14-1.linux2.6.x86_64.rpm/from/http://mysql.mirrors.hoobly.com/

sudo wget -O MySQL-client-5.5.14-1.linux2.6.x86_64.rpm http://dev.mysql.com/get/Downloads/MySQL-5.5/MySQL-client-5.5.14-1.linux2.6.x86_64.rpm/from/http://mysql.mirrors.hoobly.com/

sudo apt-get install alien

sudo alien -i MySQL-server-5.5.14-1.linux2.6.x86_64.rpm --scripts

sudo alien -i MySQL-client-5.5.14-1.linux2.6.x86_64.rpm --scripts

sudo apt-get install libaio1 libaio-dev
sudo /usr/sbin/mysqld --skip-grant &
sudo /etc/init.d/mysql start

If you want to secure the installation and put a password on the root user:

/usr/bin/mysql_secure_installation

Kittens!

Posted by on May 2, 2011 in Life | 1 comment

Well, we woke up a few days ago and found we had two kittens on the back porch! Little did we know our cat was never the guy we though “he” was and is now the mother of two new kittens! We are thinking of “Midnight” and “Misty” for new names. Mom’s name is “Pepper.” Salty, Pepper’s brother, is no longer with us…a coyote must have gotten him!  :p

The Power Of God’s Creation.

Are we ready to answer to the Almighty God?

Devastating tornadoes ripped through the country over the last few days and it gives me new found respect for the power of the wind. It reminds me of how small we actually are and how powerful God is. For the here and now, it means we need to take shelter from the storm any time severe weather is around us. For eternity, it means we need to take refuge in God Himself for eternal peace and salvation. Have you given your life to Christ?

Below are some pictures of the recent tornadoes to give you a better understanding of what can happen in the blink of an eye. Life is precious and fleeting. Don’t let another moment go by and put off the call of God in your life.

Who Needs Salvation?

Posted by on Apr 28, 2011 in Faith, Headlines | 0 comments

God is perfect. We are not. How do we measure up to God? We don’t. Christ lived a perfect life to die in our place. Jesus provided what is called the divine exchange. Our sins for His perfection. Repenting of your sins and trusting in Christ along for the forgiveness of your sins is the only way! Give up your life and give it back to your creator Jesus! Watch this video for an interesting explanation of salvation:

Obama finally releases birth certificate….or does he? God is in control…

Posted by on Apr 27, 2011 in Politics | 0 comments

“Daniel answered and said: ”Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, to whom belong wisdom and might. He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding;” - Daniel 2:20-21 (ESV)

Wow…so President Obama finally releases his birth certificate…I just don’t understand why he didn’t before. But wait… look at the background on the left side…it stays straight while it appears the grid of the document curves on a page. So this begs the question…is it real? I don’t want to jump to conclusions…but when I scan a document from a book, everything on a curve is curved…. obamalongformbirthcert

It almost appears like it was scanned without a transparent background (or edited to be that way) and then the edited version placed right on the hatched background image.

The bottom line is the birth certificate is now public. We hope and pray it is real of course and our own president would not falsify information, but with things that look funny like above…there are still questions. The issue will live on I am afraid, but no matter the real truth, our job is to move forward, knowing that God is in control of all issues, including who our president is in America. We must pray for our leaders and when we don’t agree with them, vote them out at the next election!

Here is the official PDF version of the above picture from the White House website.

Fix Out of Resource Problem with MySQL

Posted by on Mar 1, 2011 in Computers, Open Dental | 0 comments

Update:

This did not seem to work, and the only solution seems to be to upgrade to MySQL 5.5 11/27/2011

______________________________________________________________________

Possible errors you might be having:

mysqldump: Couldn't execute 'show fields from `tablename`': Out of resources when opening file './databasename/tablename#P#p125.MYD' (Errcode: 24) (23)

I started having problems with this when I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 with MySQL 5.1 installed. I am running a large database for the Open Dental Software in my office and was having the hardest time figuring out how to fix the problem. Finally I figured out it was not a MySQL problem, but a limit put on the number of files MySQL or my user could open by Ubuntu “security.”

View the problem

Here is how to test to see if this might be an issue:

sudo -u mysql bash

mysql@ubuntu:~$ ulimit -a

Rsync and SSH – Passwordless Login

Making remote copies

What if you want to copy files offsite to a remote host? No problem — all you need to do is add the host and user information. So, for instance, if you want to copy the same directory to a remote host, you’d use:

rsync -ave ssh –delete /home/user/dir/ user@remote.host.com:dir/

If you want to know how fast the transfer is going, and how much remains to be copied, add the –progress option:
